F1 2026 Season Finale: Imola Steps Up as a Potential Backup Venue (2026)

F1's 2026 season finale is in flux, with a new contender emerging in the form of Imola. The recent escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran has cast doubt over the final races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, prompting F1 to seek a backup plan. While a Malaysian GP on October 4 is in the works, the end-of-year plans are up in the air. If Qatar and Abu Dhabi are called off, F1 is eager to add another race after the Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 21, with the original Abu Dhabi date of December 6 as the most likely slot. This would ensure that the 2026 season has 22 races, fulfilling various contractual commitments on the commercial front. However, the readiness and climate of potential host ports like Portimao and Imola are in question. Portimao has a two-year deal to host the Portuguese GP in 2027 and 2028, but it wants to complete some extra work on the facility and its infrastructure ahead of those events. Hosting a race in December would be a different prospect to Imola's previous late-in-the-year slot, with the average daily high temperature for December being 7°C and the mean temperature being 4°C. But there is logic to the season-ending race taking place in Italy in a year where Kimi Antonelli is favourite to win the F1 drivers' championship and Ferrari is in contention to win the constructors' championship. Calendar developments are expected imminently, with a decision on Bahrain's fate fast-tracked by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council this weekend. The WEC season is currently due to end in the Middle East with a race in Qatar on October 24 and Bahrain on November 7, but the recent tensions have cast doubt over these events. This weekend's WMSC decision on those races, which will be primarily made on safety grounds, is set to influence the direction that F1 will take with its Middle Eastern races. In my opinion, the emergence of Imola as a potential host is particularly fascinating, given its historical significance and the potential for a season-ending race in Italy. It raises a deeper question about the resilience and adaptability of F1 in the face of unexpected challenges, and the importance of having a diverse range of host ports to ensure the continuity of the sport.
