Our Church Leadership

St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church thrives because of the energy and style of the people who are a part of our leadership. Here are a few of the people that make our church community special:

Fr. Dan Wagner

Father Dan Wagner

Fr. Daniel A. Wagner (Dan) is new to us, but not new to Upper South Carolina.  Fr. Dan grew up in Newberry, where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s.  He completed his undergraduate degree from Newberry College in 1995 and then his Master of Public Administration from the College of Charleston in 1997.  For fourteen and a half years, Fr. Dan worked for the City of Charleston and the SC Appalachian Council of Governments in Greenville, SC before discerning a call to the priesthood.  His sending parish to seminary was Christ Church, Greenville.

Fr. Dan attended seminary at the University of the South’s School of Theology (Sewanee).  He completed his Master of Divinity in 2014.  The Rt. Reverend W. Andrew Waldo ordained Fr. Dan a transitional deacon in June 2014.  In July 2014, Fr. Dan began his tenure at Christ Church Cathedral in Mobile, AL, serving as the clergy assistant.  His primary areas of work included pastoral care, youth work, and Christian formation.  In January 2015, he was ordained priest by the Rt. Reverend Philip Duncan, Bishop of the Central Gulf Coast, on behalf of Bishop Waldo, and was named Canon Pastor of the Cathedral.

Fr. Dan began his tenure here at St. Augustine’s on Ash Wednesday (March 1, 2017).  Concerning his worship style when celebrating the Eucharist, it is simple, but elegant with a deep reverence for the sacrament and an understanding of the actions that he is doing.  Concerning his preaching style, Fr. Dan will tell you that it is about delivering a message of hope and grace to a world in desperate need of healing and of God’s redemptive love.

Fr. Dan is a supporter of Cursillo, having made his weekend in 2001.  He has served on several staffs, including being lay rector in 2009.

In his down time, Fr. Dan likes to get out and enjoy the outdoors by hiking, canoeing, running, or walking.  He is happy to be home and so close to family and many friends here in the Palmetto State.  An avid Newberry College and Clemson football supporter, he looks forward to attending a game or two in the fall.

Fr. Dan is humbled and excited to be called to be our fifth priest here at St. Augustine’s and he hopes to see you at church!
